The project is funded by the Department for Transport through Active Travel England, as funding allocated to improve the National Cycle Network.

The allocated funding is not able to be spent on anything that does not improve the National Cycle Network for walking, wheeling and cycling.

The project will aim to design a safer and more welcoming route for walking, wheeling and cycling along West Town Road connecting the National Cycle Network route 41 to the new Portway train station.

Our aim is to ensure that any future increase in use brings positive benefits for residents, reducing potential conflicts between different users and creating a safer, more attractive and accessible street for everyone.

This opportunity builds on a number of design schemes that have engaged the local community in shaping proposals for the area. As a result, some improvements have already been delivered, such as those along the NCN Route 41 in Lawrence Weston.

Other schemes continue to be progressed nearby, including the Barracks Lane project, which was developed in collaboration with the Nova Primary School community.

As investment continues in the A4 Portway, the new Park & Ride and the National Cycle Network Route 41, West Town Road has been identified as an important connection between Lawrence Weston and these key destinations. We would like to explore how the street could be improved to better serve local residents, making it easier and safer to walk, wheel and cycle. Potential improvements could include better pavements and crossings, enhanced accessibility for people with reduced mobility, and additional planting to create a more pleasant street environment.
